Not limited to physical exercise, activity also includes mental conditioning. When you exercise regularly, you expect to see changes in your physical condition. Strength training builds muscle, and cardio workouts improve heart health and stamina. Similarly, stimulating the brain with thought-provoking books, puzzles and memory challenges will help you keep your mind sharp. Make this work for you: Join an exercise group like a spinning or dance class. Find a workout partner to help motivate you and keep you accountable. Pick a topic you’ve always wanted to learn more about and sign up for night class. Whatever activities you choose, make sure they’re fun and enjoyable. You may have to try several types of groups before you find what works for you. Set both mental and physical goals for yourself to keep track of your progress. Diabetes Self-Management Class This five-session course will teach you how to manage your blood sugar, medications, exercise, meals and sick days. Taught by certified diabetes and health educators, this class will help you learn everyday strategies focused on nutrition, exercise and disease management. • Mondays, Feb. 18 through March 18, 10 a.m. to noon or 5 to 7 p.m.; April 1 through 29, 5 to 7 p.m. • Cost: $45 for five sessions • Registration required. There is no fee—all with a diagnosis of diabetes or pre-diabetes are welcome to attend, learn and discuss for improved self-management. • Third Wednesday of every month, 5 to 6 p.m. • FREE OF CHARGE.
